New Week 10/05/2009

Today is the beginning of a new week. This week will be great. I want to start off by thanking everyone that gave donations; I was able to purchase a truck for myself. I will get it out fitted with a crane, hand controls, and a knob on my steering wheel.

So the reason this week is great is today I put a socket on my left leg. A socket is hard plastic shell that suctions to your leg. I stood up in it for about two and a half minutes. I am excited! I was told that once I am able to stand on that leg for 10 min they will cast my right leg. After that I will have both legs in sockets and I will start walking. Tomorrow, I have a neuro psych test. We think that during my initial surgery my blood pressure dropped so low that it caused brain damage. Then on Wednesday, I go to my driving test. They are the ones that actually decide what adaptive equipment I need on my vehicle. Finally, Friday I get to walk around in this new house that will hopefully be more adapted for me so I can get around easily.

I am also getting ready because I’m going to San Diego next week. If you remember me talking about how much I loved the Paralympics, this is a chance to do more. I am going to a camp that runs Tuesday through Sunday out in San Diego. I am really excited to have the chance to may be show the actual coaches how good I could be. That would be a dream come true if I make it to the Paralympics. I would have never thought about the Olympics when I had my legs.

That brings me to my next topic I want to discuss. I was realizing this week how much I took for granted before my surgery. I wake up every morning and it’s hard to even get dressed. I have to be lying down. The thing that frustrates me the most is if I need to get up for anything in the middle of the night I have to get back in my wheel chair and do what I need to then transfer back into my bed. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful to be alive; I just have a new found appreciation for all the things I use to do before this.

Colton, When all this began, I went through all the emotions, anger, sympathy, anxiousness, fear, relief and finaly inspiration. I thought of my own grand kids. Now, that I know you are going to alright, I don't worry about you anymore. I am in awe of your courage. If your ever in Bryan/College Station, give me a call.
P.S. Tell your Grandad David I said "hey".

Colton,

I'm so excited for your progress and I sense the excitement in your post this week about all that is going on. God bless you! I'm sure that it's not easy...I can't even begin to imagine but remember Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strenghth". It seems He is certainly giving you strength and blessings in the midst of this storm. You are an encouragement to us all. Thank you so much!!!!

You probably don't remember me, but I am one of Brett Upchurch's cousins. I played piano way back then at the wedding. We have prayed and kept updated through your website every step of the way and are praising God for His help in your healing! It is so good to hear of the new adventures that are in front of you, no matter how hard the path has been to get you there. We will continue to pray for you and your family. Blessings from Indiana!

Colton and Family, This journey is on going. Your life will have many high and low moments. But through it all you will continue to have success mainly because of your faith and belief in the Lord. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for inspiring others in many ways. I pray you have many high points in your journey and continued progress with your therapy. I've shared your story with many rehab patients when they need to hear a pick me up story...God Bless VY
