I can walk! 10/29/2009

Hey everyone,

I have had some really great things going on this week. First, last Friday was the first time I walked. I had a socket on my left and on my right a little stilt since my legs are not even. I stood up with a short walker. Then I walked on my own two legs with a walker. I have to use the walker because I do not have enough balance yet. My balance will be better when I have feet on my leg. Then the day before that I went to my first wheelchair basketball practice and I loved it. I really want to start playing on the team and we have practice once a week. The day before that was I got a chance to meet with the Spurs. They are some really nice people. I got to play wheelchair basketball aganist them it was so cool. I had some scares this week. The doctors are afraid I have an infection in my bones.  I had bone scans Tuesday and Wednesday. Today I grew instantly. I went in to put my prosthesis on and they both had been raised. My left had a little stomper on it and about a 4 inch raise on both legs. One of my legs has gotten smaller so I have to get a smaller socket made. I am excited because I get to go to a college football game this weekend. It is one of my favorite teams. My in laws are in town and they have been so much help. I moved into my new house this past Monday it is really nice.

Congratulations buddy. You told me that you were going to get a video of that though. I'm proud of you, it was tough seeing you in that bed a few months ago and being told I might lose a friend, but we all knew that you were going to fight back. What did I tell you when I was in Texas? I knew you would recover ahead of schedule. You're a hard-headed Texas haha
Congratulations again brother

Hello Colton,
If you don't remember me. You left my & Mr.Benevides' office that semester right before Christmas to go and finish at Venture. I was sad to see one of my best office aides go and progress. But you did it. You were so respectful and genuine and true. That is what is due in return to you plus more. You were determined then and I see you are still that way. You deserve it- Congratulations. You & Jessica have been in my thoughts and prayers since this ordeal. The best is yet to come for the two of you. Just wait. =-)When you come to Arlington again we all can't wait to see walk through the Halls of Sam Houston. Lots of love and prayers to you two. Take Care and God Bless.

Hey, Airman. You are one brave dude, and I'm so sorry for what you went through, and what you are continuing to battle. I had a surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center when I was a SrA in SFS, 2001. They removed a vain malformation in my leg, nicked a nerve, and discharged me because I was a cop, and couldn't perform my duties. (I lost feeling from the knee down on my right leg) No retirement, just a few grand in "severance pay," chronic pain, and the end of my lifelong dream, or any possibility of using my experience on the outside. I, of course, am fortunate, to be alive, and I made it out with my leg still intact, so I thank God for that, but...fight, brother. Fight and fight and fight and fight to stay in. Fight for all of us who didn't or couldn't or won't be able to.I had nobody to help me through the process, the paperwork, the bureaucracy, and now I'm left with an impossible dream. To be a cop and retire from the United States Air Force. Keep fighting, Airman Read. You have the benefit of press. Exposure. Media. Use it every time a flea farts in your direction. Don't let anybody forget. There are a LOT of people coming back, and that already have been wronged by a medical professional that is totally unaccountable for "human errors." What if a military cop shot someone who was innocent out of "human error?" Is that cop held accountable for their actions? You bet your ass. Why not military doctors? It's time to shut the doors on "get out of jail free" cards for these people. It's not right. Nobody should have that kind of immunity. Thank you for having the courage to speak out and say something, man. Please keep fighting. Keep walking. Keep strong. This comment widget asked for my email, so you can contact me to utilize any resource that I have available to help. I'm a marketing specialist, so if I can help with ANYTHING (even a place for family to crash while in Sacto) from one Airman to another, just say the word. Keep it up, dude. You're an inspiration.

Hey Binky! I've been hearing all about your great progress and am SOOO proud of you! I hope you and the other guys from the Squadron were able to have a good visit, and I hope you were able to get some peace from the CDI results. How are you enjoying San Anton? :-) I'm looking forward to getting back there to see my family (I'm in Schertz). When I'm home for the holiday's I'll give you and Jessica a call, I'd love to meet up with you both and catch up! Plus it'll give me a reason to make some more of that Spicy Chicken Dip, lol. Give a big hug to Jessica for me.
