Recovery Progress 08/12/2009

Today, Colton was fitted for his custom wheelchair. We are all very excited about the huge progress he has been making. I viewed some housing options for when Colton is moved to the CFI (Center for the Intrepid). He is working on transfers from the bed to the wheelchair and back. We are working on getting new pieces of furniture, like a bed and a table that would be accessible for Colton being in a wheelchair. He has been eating well and his overall health has made amazing improvement. We are very thankful to Lackland Air Force Base for the great southern hospitality they have shown to us. This coming week, a golf tournament is being hosted in honor of Colton at Lackland AFB. Also, other fund raisers have been in place since Colton and I arrived. We are amazed at the continued support we have recieved from our Air Force family. We are truly blessed for the situation that we are in. God does not put you through what you cannot get through, we are firm believers of that. Coltons strength and positive attitude amazes me everyday. He was asked by one of his doctors if he was hopeful about his future, he looked at the doctor with a stunned look on his face and said, "No! I KNOW I'm going to get up and walk and ski again. There's no doubt in my mind. There's just no other option." I have learned so much from my husband throughout this experience and have been floored by his positivity and strength to perservere and want to move on with his life. We could all learn something from Colton in this situation. I know I occassionaly hear myself or others say how hard our day and then I remind myself of Colton and know I have no room to complain. As we were going to the cafeteria the other day, Colton overheard a man talking about how much he hated wearing his uniform in this heat, and Colton looked and me and said, "How could he hate wearing his uniform? I'd do anything to wear mine."

Again, I would personally like to express my thanks. Your words of encouragement help Colton everyday. I know he reads the website daily now and appreciates all the help and support.

I wrote a couple weeks ago and just want you to know that I pray for you every time you come to mind, which is several times every day. I will never forget to pray for healing and strength for you: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual.

I am a stranger to you but you are a part of my life forever! Just keep in mind: Life is not about this life. This life is boot camp/basic training (not sure what AF calls it) for eternity. What you are going through will be to your eternal glory---and His! Stay strong! (I know you will.)

Colton and Jessica,

I think what Patti said could not have been said better,"I am a stranger to you but you are a part of my life forever!" I too feel this way. I check your website daily and I am so happy to hear how you progressing. I admire your strength. Keep it up, we are all supporting you. You both are in my daily prayers. God Bless you both. Thank you for keeping all of us updated.

I read the update today and what I read was an answer to prayers. To hear that Amn Read is doing so well is an answer to very many prayers. His determination to persevere despite all that has happened to him is truly inspirational.

Now that y'all are here at Lackland have ya contacted the Fisher houses for some assistance with housing? Also there are Fisher houses at Brooks that might be able to help ya once Amn Read is transferred to the Center for the Intrepid.

If you haven't been in contact with the Fisher houses I would highly suggest doing so. They were a God send for me and my family during some very tough times.

Thank you for letting us know that our prayers for Colton, Jessica and family are being answered. Even though you may not hear from us every day, please be aware that you are in our daily prayers. There is a long tough road ahead but at this point a very rewarding journey has been started so just never give up - never give up.

Thank you for updating the website so we can keep up with Colton's progress. I am praying for you guys and love you very much. I'm so proud of you, Colton. I know you will have the determination to get back up and walk (and ski) again. You are an inspiration to me and our family.

Colton,

That doctor asked if you were hopeful about your future? For reals?! Silly, silly man. I suppose it's not his fault. He simply had no way of knowing that our Colton does not admit defeat, or that he refuses to take "no" for an answer.

But he knows now.

Proud of ya, kiddo! Keep up the good work...and email your favorite teacher some pictures so I can put 'em up in my classroom, will ya?! (If you don't, I'll be forced to use your yearbook picture from freshman year.) ha!

:) Ms. Hader

I just learned today of what you, Colton and your families have been facing. I am truly saddened by all this, and I pray that God will continue to watch over you all. As an Air Force spouse and the mother of an Airman, I understand Colton's steadfast devotion to the Air Force. Thank you for keeping us posted and keep looking forward. WAYDAGO A1C READ!!!!
And isn't that just like Jesus ... using a 'terrible wrong' for His honour & glory?!? Again, as it's been stated so many times, we all ask, "Why me Lord - why me?" To God be the glory, GREAT things He has done, regardless of circumstances!
And yes, I too will forever be a 'member' of your family ... via the USAF and the family of God.
Someday as you stand before God, he will say, "Well done thou good & faithful servant, enter into eternal joy with the master." You can count on my continued all-around-support. Agape.

Colton and Jessica,

I'm so glad to hear you are doing so well and making such GREAT progress already. You're a fighter, that's for sure, and you are proving that now more than ever. Keep up the good work, the FANTASTIC attitude and incredible faith! God bless you both (and your families too).

Jessica & Colton-I can only imagine the pain you're going through, because everyone's situation is unique. However, I can empathize due to the fact that my husband (soon to be retired medically after 2.5 years in the WTU)and I went down a similar road of tragedy. My husband was paralyzed during a routine surgery from a surgeon's mistake. I will never forget hearing the surgeon telling me the outcome & then calling our friends & family while I sat in the hospital alone & scared.

He's still a determined young man, just like Colton, only now he's in a wheelchair. None of us will ever understand "why" but we learn to go on one day at a time with the help of those around us.

My biggest learning was to ask for help & to have patience adjusting to our new life. Allow yourself time to grieve for what is lost, but keep your dreams in sight for the future.

If there was one thing I could change about the past couple years, it would be trying to connect with other spouses going through similar situations in a military setting. You both will remain in my thoughts & prayers.

Dear Colton and Jessica,

When I first heard this story it brought me to tears for both of you. My son just joined the AFJROTC at our local highschool, so that makes us "cousins." I and my family send our love and prayers to you two wonderful people and your families. Thank you for sharing both your heartbreaks and triumphs. Your attitudes alone are an inspiration. May God bless you all abundantly.

With love and respect,

Just wanted to pass on a letter I got from one of the Texas politicians.

Since I am transposing it any typo's are due to my less than stellar typing abilities, the late hour and a dysfunctional keyboard.

"Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the recent tragedy involving Airman Colton Read. The decisions of federal agencies have a direct impact on the lives of many Texans. For that reason, I am happy to offer my assistance to Airman Read.

My office has been in direct contact with Airman Read's family, and his condition had improved every day to the point that he was able to be moved to another facility for more specialized treatment. Unfortunately, due to privacy laws, I am unable to release further details of his recovery.

It is a privilege to serve in the United States Senate and to be of Service in this matter.

John Cornyn
United States Senator" (10 Aug 2009)

It is my hope that since Senator Cornyn has been made aware of the situation and has responded he will be willing to step up and help y'all out.

I just became aware of your story thru a conversation with your grandfather, David Beasley. It warms my heart to see the love and respect this man has for his grandson. I know this has been a nightmare for Colton and Jessica, but it is apparent that God has a bigger and better plan for this couple. This was truly a horrific mistake that should have never happened, but did. I hope that thru strong will, patience, love and alot of prayer that you both become stronger people. You have a wonderful family to fall back on for support. I wish you strong will, much love and warm compassion throughout the road ahead.

Hey Colton!
Welcome back to Texas! I am so proud to know you, and my heart swells every time I read the latest on you. I know in my bones that you are going to change a number of things for yhr good of others. I never doubted that the USAF would not ever let you down. You will change things as we know them. You lost your legs, but you will prove it does not take legs to defend your country, it takes heart and commitment! Rock on my friend, show em how it is done! Ya got a special little place in my heart.

08/17/2009 18:04:41

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God is good and He will always see you through.

I'd also like to say that, ever since reading the news article on the front (home) page, which does not cite any source, so it can only be assumed that the creators of this website authored it, I've taken issue with one sentence. "Now, the Air Force wants to medically discharge Read, leaving the newlywed with only $1,600 a month and no additional compensation for the damage inflicted."
I imagine that is surely the last thing that ANYONE in the Air Force WANTS to do to your family, but if someone in the Air Force told the family this, I vehemently request that they be properly quoted, including their name and unit.

If a representative of the Air Force did not tell the family this, then I respectfully request that this information be regarded as misleading/innacurate and be appropriately removed from the posted information about Airman Read's ordeal.

I pray that God continues to bless you and your family. I am inspired by Colton's perseverance through this tragedy and applaud his positive attitude and strength. I also am inspired and made proud by the out-pouring of support from the military community to ensure that the Read family is respectfully taken care of.

Keep the faith!

We cannot put into words how your story has impacted us. Thinking about what you have gone through so far chokes us up pretty hard. The thing that really gets the tears flowing is your continued grace and press. As a fellow Christian I know the highest compliment one can recieve is to be told that Christ can be seen in you. Colton, I see Christ in you. Keep your faith! You are in our prayers.

PS Jessica you rock! I am sure Colton knows how blessed he is to have you there by his side.

I have been following this story since it broke! My heart is praying for you and your family. I am mom to a son stationed at Elmendorf and do feel your pain. Your progress and determination is such an inspiration to me! I am a double breast cancer survivor and there are so many times I feel sorry for myself! How selfish of me! I am blessed with so much, children, grandchildren and a husband who still stands by me and loves me too! You are a very special man (excuse me--airman!) and you have a very special wife, and very special family. Good luck and God Bless!

"How could he hate wearing his uniform?

The new uniforms are very hot especially for those of us that work outside in this heat and as you know it has been very hot this summer in TX. I am very sure that is what he meant by stating that because I say all the time and not because I hate wearing the US Air Force uniform. The old uniforms were BDU and they were so much more cooler than what we have now.
